I just spotted this news article and it seems that in the near future we might at last be able to take our own bikes into Vietnam.
If anyone finds a follow up article or sees an official announcement -or better still manages to get their bike accross the border legally please post it.

'The government has added motor homes to the list of vehicles that foreigners are allowed to bring into Vietnam for travel purposes, news website Dan Tri reported.Amendments to the decree on foreign vehicles say that passenger vans with nine seats or less, motor homes and motorcycle are allowed to enter Vietnam.'

Thanks for the link, will be great if it ever happens. Wonder why they have added motorhomes to the list, it's a rare site indeed to see one of them of Thai roads.

Not sure if much has changed other than that left-hand drive motor-homes/caravans can now (starting 1 August 2015) be brought in as well as the shorter period the Ministry of Transport has to make a decision on applications to bring foreign left-hand drive vehicles in. So right-hand drive vehicles (Thailand, etc.) can still not be brought into Vietnam and you still need a permit to bring in cars and motorbikes.

Foreign visitors will be able to bring left hand drive caravans into Vietnam for travel purposes, according to the recently issued Government Decree No.57/2015/N?-CP. Decree No.57/2015/N?-CP on management of motor vehicles brought into Vietnam by foreign tourists was issued to replace Decree No.152/2013/N?-CP dated November 4, 2013. Under the new decree, foreign visitors are allowed to bring left hand drive vehicles of nine seats or less, left hand drive caravans, and motorcycles into Vietnam – the old decree does not allow foreigners to bring caravans into Vietnam.

The new decree also stipulates the maximum time for the Ministry of Transport to issue a license for these types of vehicles entering Vietnam will be three days, down from five. In case the Transport Ministry refuses to approve the entry of these vehicles to Vietnam, it must send a written document to explain why to the applicants within three days.

The new decree will take effect August 1, 2015.

Hi,

Was looking to plan a trip from Cm to Hanoi then down to Ho-Chi-Min, back up through Cambodia then back to CM.

I'm based in CM and own my own bike.

Is it possible to take this bike into Vietnam at this time ?

Thanks

As far as I know there has been no real change yet and it remains difficult and expensive (unless you are part of a group) to enter Vietnam on your own bike. Best is to contact Flamingo in Hanoi who can help to get all the paperwork done - more info here: border-crossing-into-vietnam-motorbike

In the past the border guards at particular crossings were willing to be let you in without all the paperwork but that in almost all the cases results in that you will have to enter and leave Vietnam at the same border crossing. However, in case you have an accident with your bike in Vietnam you might have serious problems.

In my opinion the best option is still to fly in, rent a bike in Vietnam and fly back to continue your journey on your own bike and I guess that Flamingo can help also with that with one-way rentals say rent in Hanoi and drop the bike off in HCM city or the other way round.

Ok thanks for that. I've emailed a few tour companies there to see what they can provide but will also look into the info you've supplied to see if it's possible to ride there. Would love to do that massive loop.

Also looking into Myanmar cross boarder rides too so will post in that forum. See how I get on.

I'll reply with the outcome.
