Taking a Thai registered motor car /pick-up out of Thailand

If the Thai registered motor car/ pick-up is registered in your name, to "temporary export" the vehicle out of Thailand you will need an "international Transport Permit" for the motor car/ pick-up (Car passport). To get this from the Thai Land Transport Department, you will need:

1. Your passport plus a copy of the passport photo page & a copy of your visa stamp.

2. Vehicle registration book (blue cover) with the road tax up-to-date.

3. Proof that the vehicle's insurance is valid

4. 125 bht processing fee

In Chiang Mai, there currently is a 2 day wait for processing then they will issue you a purple covered "passport" for your vehicle that looks the one below:

This gets stamped at the international borders every time you leave & re-enter Thailand. The purple vehicle "passport" is valid for one year.

Below is the map of the location where you can get the vehicle "passport" issued in Chiang Mai, it's on R 108 by the airport.

Are they issuing them for bikes again ?? Or only cars ??

thought it stopped..

On the car passport:
The "period of validity" expires when the current vehicle road tax expires. It can be up to 1 year, depending on when you have the purple book issued.

You can extend the book for 2 more "periods of validity". Not sure if they have to be consecutive.

For bikes, the law was changed several years ago. They will issue a "Vehicle Registration Certificate" for you for a nominal fee. This is basically an English translation of your green registration book. In Chiang Mai, this is done at the Nong Hoi office.
