Stricter enforcement at Chiang Mai police checkpoints

It seems the Chiang Mai police have been told to enforce traffic regulations to the maximum.

A friend on a scooter today got stopped at a police checkpoint on the Superhighway/ R 11 near Barcelona BMW, Chiang Mai and was fined 2,000 Bht for modified motorcycle. It had an aftermarket exhaust, but was not load at all.


Also it seems their checklist when they stop you now is as follows:

1. Helmet
2. Valid road tax
3. Number plate
4. Driving license
5. Green book registration (not sure if copy qualifies)
6. If foreign license they have been asking for valid international license. Some say Thai law says you can drive here for 30 days on a foreign license, Ive never seen actual proof of the Thai law here
7. Modified motorcycle, exhausts etc.... (2,000 Bht fine)

I got stopped on the inside of the North Western corner of the moat last week on a scooter. Bike registration was up to date so they asked for my licence and IDP. 1000b if you have a foreign licence but no IDP.

Not news to anyone maybe but note that only IDPs in accordance with the 1949 road traffic convention are valid in Thailand. Thailand never ratified the later 1968 road traffic convention. Better yet, get a local license. New for this year is that the temporary licenses are valid for two years rather than one year, at least in Chon Buri.

If this translation is correct a copy of the green book is sufficent, see section 42.

Same in BKK for new licenses, now valid for 2 years.

Had a farrang friend yesterday get stopped solo. Had license, had tax, got him for 400 baht for rear footpegs on the scooter out with no passenger (serious).
