Sa Kaeo, Thailand to Siem Reap/ Angkor Wat, Cambodia
For those who like taking pictures, you must get to the temples in Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The Thai town of Aranyaprathet at the border has an enormous market, mostly clothes related, that come across the border from cambodia in hand drawn carts, the goods originating mostly from Vietnam. There is also a huge trade in second hand clothes that have come from Taiwan, which cannot be sent into China for obvious reasons. It is quite fun as the market is 1km long, to rent a golf cart to tour around. You can find motorcycle gear here if you poke around, lots of second hand leather jackets as well.
Thai Customs at Aranyaprathet exit are very polite and friendly, usually very fast. The Poipet, Cambodia entry point is a little tricky, ther can be officials looking for tea money.
I usually pull up at the police office on the right and get them to process my visa on arrival, I think 1,000 bht is the cost.
Checking in with Cambodian customs is a personal choice. Many people on bikes do NOT check-in with Cambodian customs and just carry straight on in.
Poipet, Cambodia tourist Police office:
It's about 120km to Siem Reap from the border, the old dilapidated road is now a tarmac road in reasonable condition. Driving there is atrocious , motorcycles are cars coming from all directions, be careful.
In Siem Reap (the town near Angkor Wat), we stayed at the "kool Hotel" below, 1,500 bht a night.
Rooms were excellent
All the ATM machines in Siem Reap spit out USD$, you can pay for everything is USD$ there.
We tried to take our bikes into the area where the temples were, but the police don't allow it, so we had to take a tuk tuk the last 2km
Some temple photo below:
First time i've seen coconuts delivered like that
Siem Reap is a very lively town ..lots to do at night with great food
