Two cyclists over a year into their RTW trip killed while travelling through ISIS territory, a sad story indeed and a warning for other RTW travellers.

Well first of all - its IS policy to claim theyre behind all those kinds of attacks and terror. Wether theyre really the ones responsible for the attacks is still not sure.
Secondly - Tadjikistan is a country where IS not normally are present so to claim these very unlucky souls where travelling through ISIS land is a strange formulation.

You can read more about the incident here: IS shows 'Tajik tourist killers' in video

Btw - it was 4 persons who was killed, in addition to the couple from Usa it was a dutch and a swiss person killed too.

It can also be worth mentioning that 3 RTW cyclists has been killed in Thailand the last 3-4 years. All by ruthless thai drivers...

Fair points, the article actually goes on to mention the two other cyclists murdered, travelling in any country has its own inherent dangers, as we all know travelling with any mode of transport can be a risky business in SE Asia.

I think what has brought attention to this incident was the foolhardy statement made one of the group in their blog.

"You read the papers and you’re led to believe that the world is a big, scary place," Austin wrote.

“People, the narrative goes, are not to be trusted. People are bad. People are evil."

“I don’t buy it," he continued. "Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own... By and large, humans are kind. Self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes, but kind. Generous and wonderful and kind.”

Whichever way it's a sad loss and a wake up call to travellers.

Very tragic and sad event for sure. Travelling is never risk free and precautions should always be taken, but you can never expect or get total safety and risk free presence around you. Neither in your home nor «on the road».
