Re: Phuket
It's something I've never fully understood & have been guilty of it myself.
If you're going to visit another country whether on holidays or for longer, why hang out with your own countrymen?
I lived in London for 2 1/2 years when I was younger & fell into the trap of sticking with Aussies & Kiwis. Worst thing I ever did as I don't think I got to see the real UK, just ended up getting pissed at the "Antipodean" pubs most of the time.
The stereo type of the English going to Majorca or Benidorm etc comes to mind too. Sitting around a pool, drinking pints & eating fish & chips? "Why can't they speak english & their money is too hard to understand!"
I have a mate that lived in Seattle for 6 years. Drank at an Aussie pub, most his mate were from this area etc.
That's one of the reasons I think I like travelling to Northern Thailand. You have the small ex-pat community for a bit of a laugh, but you don't have too hang with them.
Bike, ride, locals, laugh. I like that white people are few & far between when you get out of the bigger cities.
