Options for a trailer queen ??

As I have somehow ended up with a proper MX'er, something I didnt plan and isnt ideal for riding back and forth to even the local trails on blacktop.. I am kinda looking at my options.

I have been avoiding buying a pickup, I may break down at some point but leave that obvious solution for now, if buying a bigger motor I would rather have an SUV I think. Next best one is a trailer setup. My understanding for thai 'law' (as variable as that is) is that any real trailer has to be registered with its own plate and road reg / tax ? This probably isnt vital to my local needs to be fair but does effect what I would pay for what solution.

Solution 1) a proper bike trailer, with lights and brakes, pref able to hold 2 bikes.. I would expect this to run to a bit of money, be made of decent materials and hence if spending that kind of cash probably want it legal too. Seen 'new' ones fabbed up but at prices that do make me cringe a bit. If anyone knew of a second hand deal then great lets talk.

Solution 2) a mini trailer, made up by someone locally, with decent axle and running gear, maybe without brakes or lights, maybe not legal.. This could be a 1 or 2 bike setup and more in the cost range I would like. While not legal its a cost balance that may work for me.

Solution 3) Finding one of these trailers they pull behind scooters to shift shit around up here. The kind they 'sit on' the bar or mount to the grab rail. These have 2 bike wheels, no brakes, and are simplicity itself. I wouldnt want to go over 40 or 50 kph with one behind me, but then I only want to get the bike to very local trails. I cant imagine these cost much stock and either a stock one or a modified one (wider wheelbase) without a 'body' but with a set of wheel hold ing clips and tie down mount points. I cant think this option would be too expensive, and would solve my needs (with some obvious drawbacks) with the minimum of fuss.

Any ideas on the above ??
People who would fab one up at a decent price ??
Or places to go inquire how much those 'scooter trailers' are ??
Any other clever ideas (rear racks to cars, putting a wheelset under the rear wheel, stuff I havent thought of) ??

I am not in a mad hurry, I can ride to trails on it, its just not ideal running a pinger full bore getting a to b and would be happier not putting those kind of kms onto its engine (and tyres) if I can do it at the right cost balance. Plus if I have the easy option I am more likely to head it over to Rossis track or get more use out of it.

Even a hack job rig like this would be a suitable solution.

Looking to use my car to get it A-B, added benefit is being easy to drag more kit, drinks cooler, more fuel, to the trail too.

Talk to Harry Sprangers (rides a ZX 10R himself) at Upbeat, he has new but maybe also second hand for you or can build you a simple one, more here: http://www.upbeat.co.th/

Thats actually the crowd I was aware of who make the higher priced kind of designs, with legit books and all options like lights and brakes etc.

I should ask them what a minimalist rig might run me.

What about these??

Now these kind of things I like.. As it would also give me the ability to take a bike on vacation easily down to southern beaches I like to hit each year..

I have seen things like this before and sorta meant these when I said rear racks to cars.. But I have only ever seen them on SUV's and dont know if it could work well on my motor (VW golf). Suspect not ideal but I like the option.

I tend to like this idea on an SUV more than a pickup. Getting about time I did a car upgrade anyway.

Still think a small cheap one bike trailer is my best bet, especially cost and complexity wise. After all my current needs are simply a 20 - 30km radius from home.. Will go and have a closer look at the rig Darrens made up, something like that is what I want.

I've modified a standard 6' x 4' box trailer for my needs.
It fits 2 bikes & I can replace the cutouts with panels to use it for hauling rubbish.

Check out viking trailers in Korat/Nakhon Ratchasima.

They make proper trailers with registration, not sure how much a small trailer would set you back though...

Sell the Golf & buy a pick-up, all problems gone.

But then I would have a pickup.. A problem in itself ;)

Plus theres the single handed getting a bike up to and into a pickup.. Possible but less easy..

LOS,

As you need a trailer hitch anyway how about something like this? Should be able to get something made depending on where you are. No registration, If the distance is not far it would be OK.

As you are not towing a Harley you woulldn't nee the hi-tich lifting mechanism. :RE

EDIT: Even found one on a Golf ;)

hitch

Anyone got a easy and cheap solution? I'm also looking for a trailer, basically just to take my bike to Mae Rim once in a while.

Here's the trailer I use to have. A german guy in Pattaya sells them for 50K including book and plate. The tow hitch for your car would cost approx 7K including elects and fitting. The trailer has an auto brake fitted. If anyone is interested let me know and ill try and find the guys contact details.
I personally think the best option is a pick-up and I reckon you can do it yourself using the ramps available (dirt bikes anyway). I use to load my sports bikes myself onto the trailer.

The center plate is easily removable and acts as the ramp.

The ultimate and my personal plan is to buy a Toyota Commuter and rip most of the seat out to accommodate 2 possibly 3 dirt bikes. Pimp it out with tool chests, fridges, TV's, poles etc...

Thats not bad for 50.. Its highish but your buying quality and its plated.. Cry once etc..

I actually was thinking I had got no where on this today.. Lifes gone complicated over the last few months and been out of country a whole bunch.

I do intend to go along to the metal work shop guy and see what kin of pricing that throws up soon.

my pickup is a one man operation with a ramp i got made up in phuket. simple and easy to use.
blows thais away when they see one farang get a bike in and out when they estimate at least 2 or 3 people to do it by hand.

i reckon you can`t beat a space cab pick up around here. best for 2 people or 2 farangs in the front and 2 TG`s on the smallish bench seat.
thai outlaws (inlaws) in the back if they insist in you carting them around 555

7L/100kms highway cycle, lower cost of diesel compared to gasoline, easy and cheap servicing etc etc

I would like that setup on a suv or truck.. Not practical on a hatch tho..

Did you have it locally made and if so how much..

Actually think I have just sealed a deal on Tony's (ex Johnny's) trailer which may come up at the weekend.. More costly than the price I have to build one but brakes, lights, reggo, make it a more known quantity...

I'm sure he'll get overtaken or lapped bringing it up! (just kidding :lol3 )

Had it made in Isaan for 15,000 Bht with all the lighting board wiring with a jack done included, was a great deal.

While this is active.. Any place in cm for a tow hitch ??

The one I was going to have made was going to have a DIY ghetto approach.. But I now need a ball mount style one.. Pref without going to Bangkok or something daft to have it done.

The machine shop guys near airport plaza could do that with their eyes closed?

Well he didn't have the required ball joint thing.. Hence why he was making a custom ghetto hook up..

At least that's what I understood from the last talk.. He would fab something due to not having the right kind of stock clip. I don't doubt if I had the bit, he could make a mount and fit it..

I have a spare, new ball joint that was an extra order for my trailer by mistake.

You will have to find a hitch for it though.

I got mine (ball and hitch) from a dude who make parts for microlite aircraft in CM, get in touch with Lek he will be able to take you to his fabrication shop.

Superb.. If its surplus will happily buy it from you..

The trailer Has a hitch, and I am sure the machine shop place can make a mount.. Will call you when back in Thailand..

I still have the hitch and electrics connected to my car for that trailer. If you need any measurements etc.

Well seems Darren has a ball hitch and there's also a local guy with more so that's workable..

Tony can bring it up on Sunday when he gets the klx..

So just need Jonny to check his pm for the last piece the puzzle ;)

Just in case anyones interested..

I have been talking with tilt-a-rack.. Makers of this..

01__60636_zoom.png

2__56056_zoom.png

They also have a fixed non tilting one about half the price..

It looks like they can ship them, if theres maybe 5 or so, for about 200 USD each.. There would be some taxes and it will be hard to skip them but can declare low and try to keep it down.

I think Jonny wants one.. I would spring for one also.. Anyone else like this idea ?? Would be near to 500 plus some taxes on a tilting one, and 350 ish on a fixed one. Compares well to having one made locally I think as its quality bits and aluminium.. Local made still going to be similar costs and probably heavy steel etc.

The load on that one fixing must be immense when you go over a bump or rough road and the bike gyrates.

Hummer h3 pickup.. The h3 is a turd.. All the worst elements and none of the real tough of the h1 or the tough but sanitized h2..

One wheel idea as seen on facebook..

Yeah looks like a fine art to balancing that on there..

Tho perhaps you can lift and clip the front wheel, and then its stable to lock the rear in ??

Nice beer cooler rack on the back too ;)
