Laos fishing device

Midnight Mapper sent me this beauty of a Laos fishing contraption.




Looks like they want to be as far away from the fish as possible as to not scare them off, looks pretty interesting.

I think the reason the shack is so far away is physics: the moment arm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_(physics) ) is greater when the shack is far back, and the stress on the cables is less. Try and imagine for example if the shack was close to the pivot point, and the enormous torque that would be needed to lift the net.

Interesting lever arrangement to lower and raise the net, you can see the pulley arrangement just in front of the hut.

& the net bags with rocks inside to add weight to the net.

You got to appreciate that engineering.....

Us westerners wouldn't even be allowed to get on it.. Health & Safety..
