As the riding season is near, just a small reminder that by law you need to have insurance in Laos when riding a bike, car, truck, etc. I have been stopped a few times and the police did check for insurance cover. This is what AGL shows on its website: http://www.agl-allianz.com/Motor_insurance.html

By legal binding, all vehicles circulating in Lao PDR must have insurance to cover their victims in case of road accidents.
AGL Compulsory Motor Insurance is the basic vehicle insurance determined by the Lao government as an indemnifying tool for road accident victims.
Whether you are the owner of a tuk-tuk, a pick-up, a motorbike, or a truck. You are required to have at least Compulsory Motor Insurance for your vehicle.
Even if you are a very experienced and cautious driver, you may be involved in a traffic accident and there may be victims of bodily injuries or loss of life.

Drive with a peaceful mind, knowing that if you are involved in an accident AGL will reimburse the other party as follows:
> Medical and hospital costs in case of injury
> Permanent disability compensation
> Death compensation to victim's family

Insurance companies have normally a booth or small office at the border crossings where you can buy Insurance for the period of your stay in the country. I normally use Assurances Générales du Laos (AGL) but there is also LVI (Lao Viet Insurance) and Toko Insurance.

A 1 month insurance period for Option IV (the best cover for compulsory insurance) for a bike with a capacity of > 125 CC will set you back about 100,000 Kip or about 12-13 USD and for a pick-up truck for the same 1 month period will cost you about 260,000 Kip or about 33 USD - 1 USD is about 8000 Lao Kip and 1 Thai Baht is about 250 Lao Kip.
