Without seeing any of the photo's, I'd read that the new 1050 was more off-road orientated. Looking a bit closer, KTM say they've put cast wheels on the 1050 model to save weight, so not good off-road at all! Also the 1050 has a restricted mode so that it qualifies for an A2 driving license. It now looks like the 1050 isnt the light highbred adventure bike I thought it was going to be the 1190R still seems to be the winner.

N.B KTM 1050 Adv only qualifies for A2 driving license when the restricted engine map is used

The 70kW (95hp) engine is powerful enough to have brilliant acceleration without being too aggressive and a top speed of about 200km/h. Despite a smaller bore and stroke than the 1190 ADVENTURE it originates from, the power curve can matchits bigger brother through a wide range. Despite this impressive performance, the new 1050 can be ridden with an A2 driver ́s license using a 35kW restriction map (available at KTM dealers)

I'd buy the 1190 Adventure R for me to ride and the 1290 Super Adventure for the KTM Trained mechanic and all his tools to ride with me...

I rode the 1290 from Chiang Mai to Singapore in August. I was impressed how comfortable the seat was compared to my 990 adv over similar distances. Its a comfortable and powerful tourer that would cruise at higher speeds. I am not sure if I would take it off road that is any more than unsealed roads with the stock conti attacks. I found the electronic suspension useful in being able to quickly get factory preloads and damping settings but it it would be nice to have the ability to customise it like conventional suspension set ups. The bike handles well and does not have any ill handling characteristics that I have noticed besides a slight steering wobble under deceleration at approximately 70km/h - it was later fixed by tightening the spokes and a balance. I like the 990 adv more as a do it all bike. But if your riding preferences are mainly prepared surfaces, you'll find that the 1290 feels light, quick and comfortable.
