Piston failure in Laos

I received an email from an intrepid rider friend in Laos yesterday, who had some engine issues!

This is what he said:

"Looks like a series of events led to this.
Blown rings early in the trip led to low oil level.
Worn cam chain scraping on engine block, produced aluminum particles that, reduce flow from oil filter to engine vitals.
Full throttle run, was too much for the worn out motor!!!
If I am lucky to get it back together for a run to Xam Neua and beyond, under $1000??

Trying to patch back together, the bike for a run to Huaphan while weather is just fantastic"
