One of the reasons it's always packed is our friend Meow sings there, who has a fantastic deep voice

It was a "birthday party" for Dr. Gregory Frazier as he passed through Chiang Mai recently. Celebrating his 39th birthday (again) he was honored at the Banana Tree Restaurant when the band sang "Happy Birthday" to him and lead singer Ms. Meow told the audience a little of his life and fame. During his birthday dinner he renewed old friendships while trading tales, bamboo gossip and news of pending adventures. Dr. Frazier has been roaming Southeast Asia researching the History of Motorcycling in Southeast Asia for a course he will be teaching and series of lectures.

Forget the name, only been open a couple of months.

Three Little Pigs - Southern BBQ, Cajun & Creole


A new place that has just opened in Chiang Mai - Three Little Pigs. Richard, the owner, has had restaurants in New Orleans, USA, so he knows a thing or two about Mexican/ American, southern style BBQ, cajun & creole food. He's also spent 8 years in Myanmar, so an interesting guy to talk to.









We gave it a try today and were pleasantly impressed. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious - Richard slow cooks the pork for 16 hours, marinated in spices. for 85 Bht, great value.





The chicken enchilada portions were HUGE and came with some sides and a spicy sauce all for 120 Bht.

There's even an aircon. seating area if required






Richard has managed to source these large chickens, which isn't easy in Thailand

Sala Cafe, Mae Rim


Beautiful setting over-looking the mountains in the Mae Sa valley, this is the road approaching the Sala Cafe





Beautifully manicured landscaping, a great place to go relax with plenty of space around you














Pavilion area seating too






Clauss's wife who is the owner and runs it perfectly





Great food - Pad Thai with shrimp




Spicy pork with egg & rice





Beautiful upstairs seating area







With unspoiled views









Well worth a visit

The River Market




The Duke's, Chiang Mai restaurant owner, David Anichowski's latest venture, "The River Market", an up-market, seafood & Thai themed restaurant on the banks of the Ping river, east of the night bazaar walking street, has been open now for about 6 months & seems to be doing very well. We gave it a try.












Nice airy feel to the place with high ceilings and open air, with great views of the old iron bridge and the Ping river


















Home cut french fries (always important)






Glazed ribs







Grilled pork Thai style, all this for 2 came to 550 bht without alcohol, not so bad for a high end place.

I will have to give the River Market a go. I didn't even know it was there. I am always too busy dodging traffic and screaming across the Iron Bridge.

High End Buffets in Chiang Mai



Most people agree that in Chiang Mai, the Holiday Inn does a spectacular Sunday Brunch. The fact that every Sunday, the place is completely packed makes this no argument.







The freshest tasting sushi and sashimi I've found in Chiang Mai









Crayfish, huge shrimp, mussels & oysters






Carving stations for roast beef, pork, turkey (best I've had in Thailand) & duck










Plenty of Asian dishes to keep the Thai partner happy, like custom noodle soup









Full salad bar





Freshly cooked, whole salmon






Full array of deserts





Price is 700 Bht, if you apply for a discount card while you are there they'll knock 10% off, for 630 Bht its an absolute bargain if you're into fine dining.

I can now say I am able to walk there, but I definitely would not be walking back home!

JB - I think 11am -2.30pm are the Sunday buffet hours. It's worth trying, I don't know of one person who doesn't think it's good value, even my "Key Neaw" mates.

What are the hours for the buffet?

Smoothie Blues

On the corner of Nimmanhaemin Rd & Soi 6 in Chiang Mai, great place to fuel up with a huge breakfast before a long ride. Try the eggs bennedict with bacon & the Banana pancakes.

I had a late lunch at the River Market yesterday. Me and the lady friend were the only patrons which was great, but you can feel the weight of the building on you as it is a HUGE place! Food was good. Expensive, but you pay for the view which is really nice. I wish there was more boat traffic on this river as I only spotted two tourist boats going by. I waved and was promptly ignored.

Rajdarbar Indian Restaurant


At the eastern end of Loh kroh Rd., 50 meters before it meets the night bazaar street on the north side of the road - many say it's the best Indian restaurant in Chiang Mai & I'd probably agree with them.

New BTC Restaurant, Chiang Mai


"BTC" (Bangkok Tour Company) - Don't be put off by the name, it's brand new in Chiang Mai & does awesome food, right opposite Pantip Plaza shopping mall on the corner of Chiang Klang Rd.

Great 99 Bht special if you're on a budget

Outdoor seating

Huge, aircon. indoor area

Food was good, healthy tuna salad (note the internet cafe behind)

Pretty interesting middle eastern menu

Hummus & Tahini dips were excellent

& some of the best home made fries I've had in Asia

I have read people recommending this place and decided to pay it a visit

A Burmese pork curry and rice for 90 Baht, not bad either

Pork Vindaloo, a very hot spicy one too, 90 Baht

An extremely spicy chicken phall and two portions of rice for 115 Baht

Here`s a real gem in the Maehia area south of CM city with plenty on the menu to keep everyone happy.










Khaomao-Khaofang Restaurant Chiang Mai is located in the Hang Dong district on Ratchapruek Road. This Thai restaurant is situated within a man-made jungle-like atmosphere. Guests will enjoy their traditional Thai classic dishes as the sounds of waterfalls, bubbling streams and jungle sounds pervade the ambience.

The food and ambience are great and not overly expensive and rated in the top 5 restaurants in CM.

It`s on the Night Safari road not far from the 108.

Had both great experiences on good days and swore I wouldnt go back a couple of times also..

A pulled pork sandwich with potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans and caramelized onions, this was a lovely and filling meal and all for only 125 Baht

The corn bread and butter was complimentary and was quite pleasant too

A sausage, grilled peppers and onions po boy, 160 Baht, lovely and very filling indeed

Pasta N Pizza, Hang Dong

Most serious eaters seem to agree that this is the best pizza in Chiang Mai & "might' even be the best pizza in north Thailand - could be hard to argue with for sure.

Shangri-La Hotel evening buffet might be the best evening buffet in Chiang Mai, 495 Bht. Don't go to the lunchtime buffet there, they've got cheap and stopped the sushi for lunch.
