It seems you've got the most of the lot, Phil.

I rented bikes from a few of them, I actually never was unhappy with any bike.

At Jaguar's I rented a Honda XR 250. It looked a bit old and worn shabby, but it gave a good solid feeling. I did the Mae Hong Son-loop with it and it did what it was supposed to... ride and not give troubles.
When I look back on the other bikes, I think the old XR 250 was the most eager one of them all. (not saying powerfull, what is power in a for-rent road legal 250??)

At C P 's a few days later I rented a KLX250, did an off-road trip to Pai with it. The entire bike (provided by my guide) felt and sounded like a spunge, but it performed good enough. On the uphills and technical sections I had no problem keeping up with my guide, he rode a competition KLX 300. (Guide was Nai from Mojito-tours, rings a bell to anyone??)
I did fall at one point and broke my clutch lever in half and scratched the tank decals. Costed me an extra 400 Bht to replace 'm.

Last year I took a trip to that Golden Triangle and Nan. I shopped around and decided to go with a KLX 250 from Mr Mecanic. I still wonder if I better chose the XRV from Tony's. The seat on the KLX gave me a hard time at the end. Basic price was 800,-Bht a day, but for an extra 200,-Bth they gave the service of picking you up if you had bike troubles and replace the bike if necessary. At first Mss Mecanic gave me some headaches 'cuz she wanted to keep my passport if not she wanted a 10K deposit. If she told me so a the first time I came in I could have forseen that money, but it took me a little by suprise actually.
Anyway, the bike performed well enough, the tires where a little worn out, but not to bad. (actually the same spungey feeling as CP's bike).
When I came back two days earlier as expected (girlfriends birthday forgotten!!) they gave me a voucher with the 2 remaining days for next year.

Keep in mind all these bikes are rentals, so none is as good as your own. Overall I was pretty satisfied with every each one of them.

well, that's my 5 cent,
B.

P.S.
in Pakse, Laos, I rented a Honda FTR 223, it was the best bike I rented ever.

I always used to use Jaguar bike rentals as he looked after his bikes well and was a trustworthy nice guy to deal with. Sadly, since he got kicked out of his main road shop he hasn't updated his fleet, so mostly old bikes. Now I usually use POP as they have so many bikes it is not too hard to find a good new one with decent tyres.

POP Rentals in Chiang Mai now has a combination of 6 of the new Honda CBR 500 R & F's , rental cost is 1,400 Bht a day. C & P Service in Chiang Mai have ordered 4 Honda CBR 500 X's which they will have shortly.

A chance to test drive before you buy.

Hi guys, would you mind if I add a Chiang Rai rental shop?
It is Chiang Rai Big Bike Rentals and their website is Rental Motorcycles

I have no commercial connections with them, just hoping for one of their nice t-shirts :RE

NO Problem Marcel, all free here, glad we can help them, thanks for adding them.

Never sent from an I-Phone

Being in CNX for some days 1st week this December, and need at least 02 bikes.
Anyone join us for some day trip loops?

What kind of bikes do you want - don't wait to long as November/December are busy months for the rental companies and the sooner you decide what bikes to rent and from whom, the better. I am not riding bikes so won't join you but I am sure there will be people happy to join you on some day trips.

Anyone seen the new Z800`s in any rental shops around CM yet?

Thanks.
I may go with a Versys. But my friend likes to have a Sport bike.
Don't know which rental company I should go with, however, low rate and good bike quality are things to consider.
Really happy if someone join us for some CNX loops.

^ a new Honda CBR 500 may be the way to go as they are fairly new while the rental Kawasaki 650`s have been put through their paces for a fair while now.

Trung, as far as I'm aware, there is only 1 superbike legally for rent in Chiang Mai and that is from Pekky Pro Street. I think it's an R1 but I'll check. Also Reed has 2 BMW F 800 gs's that he rents legally for USD$ 180 a day, a sizable cash deposit is needed, there is insurance.

Thanks.

I think a CBR500 and Versys should be fine for both of us.
I have contacted some proposed places but none of them replied to me.
Don't know how... I may need to call..??!

Trung,
I can get you hooked up with some in Chiang Rai if you get stuck.

Thanks Phil.

As said, I need 01 CBR500 and 01 Versys. I do expect to ride out two days 2nd and 3rd December.
If there is no cost impact, I would like to get the bikes evening of the 1st December. Otherwise, I will get the bikes early the 2nd.

Sorry what i was meaning, if you couldn't get hold of the bikes in CNX i could find some in CEI for you.

Thanks Phil very much for securing the bikes for me at Pop's, and also your help to find hotel rooms for us during our time in CNX.

We highly advise that you don't rent modified Honda CRF 250 L's in Chiang Mai with loud exhausts. If you are headed to Laos especially at the Huai Khon (Thailand) / Muan Nguen (Laos) international border crossing , THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL BE REFUSED ENTRY INTO LAOS WITH A LOUD EXHAUST, WE HAVE ALREADY HAD RIDERS REFUSED LAOS ENTRY.

Also in Thailand there's a good chance you could get fined, even have the bike impounded. There's plenty for rent with quiet exhausts, dont ruin your tour ride over a loud exhaust.

2 days ago (10th November, 2015), two Honda CRF 250 L's enetered Laos at the Nan province, Huay Khon internation border crossing. The Laos Army at the Laos entry checkpoint made them start the bikes and the Laos soldier rev'd the bike to check the exhaust noise.

Be really careful renting Honda CRF 250 L's in Chiang Mai with aftermarket exhausts, it could ruin your tour.
