Sorry to hear of your accident Chaingnoi1 and you have had so many accident free rides. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Gary

The scooter was on the wrong side of the road I guess. Scary how many times I've been in similar situations. hope you mend quickly.
How was the scooter and rider ? hope he/she was wearing a helmet

Just blows my mind, how people that spend so much time in their lives on bikes, have so little self preservation.. Just swerving into the path of other vehicles etc..

Coming from my home into town in the car recently, its a stretch of dual carriageway with a T junction joining it.. A scooter 2 up just flies out into the path of me as I am going in at >100kph.. I see them, adjust to go around the outside past their rear, and hit my horn, at which point they (without looking to check any potential path of impact) change direction to swerve to the right hand lane, but sort of wobble and dont fully commit.. They are now almost exactly in the middle of the 2 lanes, wobbling with no clear idea which side they intend to go, and approaching rapidly.. Emergency braking, lots of horn and manage to miss them.. To which I get a pair of sheepish silly grins.

I mean its a damn dual carriageway, a high speed rd, doesnt that deserve even a basic check to see if your driving into the path of traffic ?? Its not like this kind of thing doesnt happen almost every time you go out the door.

Good luck with you recovery CN1.

These people have the road sense of a stray dog and should be given as wide a berth as possible when sharing the roads with them.
If they can't see you they deem that they are in front of you and have the right of way and you will "take care them" no matter how idiotic they ride.

Good luck Ivo. I'm in kk for a couple days if you need help with the bike or anything.

Update 9 weeks after the accident

I am still in recovering mode, bone has been healing well (the head of my right humerus did break off and did break in 4 pieces). But muscles and some tendons are not cooperating like they should. Due to compensating movements the muscles around my scapular bone are getting a bit stiff & soar.

Soon for sale : Kawasaki Z250 with only 2209 km. After minor repair (fairings a bit damaged) the bike is in new condition.

Ivo, I hope that the physio therapy in Bangkok helps to get some mobility back in your arm and shoulder. These things take time and, like I said when we met a few weeks ago in KK, a guy we both know still seems to have some problems with his shoulder although he still does ride a big bike. I really do hope that things will improve sooner rather than later but don't give up hope that you won't be able to ride a bike in the near future.

Shoulders are slow to heal. My left shoulder I had two surgeries spaced over a couple years to prevent re-occurent dislocation. Seeing as they took muscle from the back and added it to the front after each op it was like starting over. I remember doing curls with one ounce and straining. That shoulder is ok now but due to the surgeries I have lost maybe 25% mobility, i.e. can't scratch my back.
Right shoulder smashed up CV joint, long recovery but it came around. Not much loss of mobility on that one.
Lots of physio, things will get better.
Fairings are cheap, fix the bike then sell it.

Marcus dont just finish with your shoulder injuries, how about your current eye problem where you managed to detach your retina... just saying

Mark, bike is fixed already. Even the KK dealer could do that faster as fixing my shoulder. So it is actually ready to be sold, as I assume I will not ride a motorbike for at least 1 year. But currently I am in Bangkok and will be back in KK next month.

Another update : Now about 11 weeks after the accident (I stopped counting).
Since about 10 days a strong improvement started. Less pain, better sleeping, better feeling. As of that more exercise to improve power of motion ... and that works. A few weeks ago I could barely move my arm, now I can even move a 1.2kg weight. Must say I can still not make torsion in my shoulder and can still not lift my arm myself above the shoulder. The sweet fysio girl can lift me arm up-to 120 degree ... still 60 to go.

But hell muscles and soft tissue are indeed stubborn! But well I can drive a car again, so that give me a bit feeling of freedom! Might even try the bike this week hahaha.

Update after 3 months and also the last update
Although the use of my shoulder is still not the way it was before the accident, it is now in a acceptable way. I can more or less live a normal life again. And there seems still to be progress. I can drive my car and last week I did even ride bicycle again! And I did even ride my wifes scooter yesterday.

Although I saw the doctor yesterday and he thinks that the capsule has become to thick and that it is limiting the movement of my arm. He recommend that if this not improves in the next 3 months that I should do a "small" surgery to make a small cut in the capsule to give my arm more movement. I also did learn some new ways of exercise, a bit painful but effective.

I still think that real normal use (as far as possible) of my shoulder & arm will take another 3 to 6 months. And I think my right shoulder will always be a part with some problems and less range of motion for the rest of my life. I assume that I will need to do extra exercise for my right shoulder for at least 1 year and maybe much longer.

Lessons learned of humiliation from my body telling me "For 50 years you took for granted that all works almost 100% like it should be. But now you have to do something to get it back and keep it that way!"

And lessons learned of deep respect for people who have much more bodily harm (by accident or birth) as me but are able to live a happy life.

Nice work CN1 we certainly heal slower in our more "advanced" years and soft tissue is far worse than broken bones.

Seems us bike lovers have many more issues than the general public.
Of all the broken bones, torn ligaments, nerve and tendon damage i've had over the years the only one that really bothers me now is an arthritic condition in my right knee from an accident a few decades ago.

Using some anti inflammatory Diclofenac cream on it recently has made a huge improvement.

Ivo, good to hear that things have improved considerable since we met the last time in KK. It might not be the same as before your accident but I am quite sure that over time and with more exercises to improve mobility of the shoulder and arm you'll be on the bike again. And, yes we are not 20 anymore and the body takes more time to heal but that is part of growing older. Hope to see you again sometime somewhere in Thailand.
