Occupants of vehicles of any kind who drink alcohol during travel are now subject to six months imprisonment and/or a Bt60,000 fine, the Office of Alcoholic Beverages announced yesterday.

The penalties will also be imposed on drinkers in vehicles parked on sidewalks or shoulders of public roads, including sois, regardless of whether the vehicles are moving, OAB director Samarn Footrakool said.

That includes passangers not just the driver!!!!!!!

About three times a week now, around 11pm, the police in Chiang Mai set up a road block at Ta Phae Gate outside Mcdonald's. You get to know when it's there, because all the scooter traffic is going the wrong way up the one way street.

Passengers cant drink ??

So you cannot take a tuktuk home after the bar ??

Truly idiot ruling if true.. Not thought through at all. Drunk people have to walk home ??

You can drink before and after, but not while, you drive or beeing a passenger.

The wording of the law is iffy but taxis , buses and trains not affected by the passenger rule , private cars and motorcycles definitely are ,its a new bonanza for the police though as its obscure and would you argue the toss in court and risk 60kor .6 months jail and also lawyers costs just to clarify the situation ........er no i think 3-5k tea money may seem like a sensible option or drink no booze .

NO thats not what the new law means

breath tests on all occupants , if you are over the limit even if not driving you can be prosecuted , its really designed to stop masses of drunken thais piling into cars and pickups and having accidents as they tend to have more booze on board , but the law will be used liberally by the BIB .

Sounds too crazy even for Thailand. The article that I suppose is the source states "...drink alcohol during travel...".
